On Saturday April 2, WPI’s Men’s Rowing team hosted the crews from Wesleyan, UMass Amherst and Colby in a season-opening contest on Lake Quinsigamond. The Varsity Eight crew for the Engineers finished the two kilometer course in a time of 6:09.0, beating Wesleyan by a margin of two and a half seconds. UMass and Colby took third and fourth place, respectively. The win allowed the team to reclaim the Class of 2003 Cup, last won by WPI in 2012. The cup was not contested the last two years due to inclement weather.

The other WPI varsity crew, the varsity four, also took first place in their race with a 7:42.19 mark, defeating UMass by over thirty seconds. The Engineers took second place in the second varsity eight race, as well as taking both second and third in the third varsity eight race.

The men’s crew team will compete in two contests this upcoming weekend. On Saturday they will take on Williams, Connecticut College, MIT and Franklin & Marshall with the Donahue Cup on the line. On Sunday they will be back in action against Rochester, Bates and URI. Both contests will take place at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.
